Once the clock struck 8:29 p.m. on Saturday, the Paramount Theatre’s house lights dimmed, and audience members turned their heads toward a white light revealing a line of dancers in the theater aisle. As the dancers moved toward the stage, drag entertainer Diamond Dior Davenport began singing and dancing, and cheers ensued. The Majestic Ball was in full swing.
Texas State Board of Education renews American Indian/Native Studies course

The Texas State Board of Education (SBOE) renewed a American Indian/Native Studies course on Friday, Jun. 27. The 9-4 vote followed more than four hours of discussion on Thursday and Friday, during which testifiers explained the course’s importance and board members debated the course’s legality given implementation of a state law (Senate Bill 12) that bans diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives for schools serving K-12 students.

With nothing but $7,000 in his savings and a dream, then-aspiring musician Sylvester Uzoma Onyejiaka II, also known as Sly5thAve, moved to New York City and worked at Macy’s, practicing his saxophone during lunch breaks. Now a Grammy-award winner, Sly5thAve, a multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer, brought his unique sound to the South by Southwest stage for the first time.
